Six Ways to Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month

United States By Christy Lowry September 26, 2022

Six fun ways to fill your calendar during National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15.

For a full month, the U.S. celebrates the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans during National Hispanic Heritage Month. From September 15 to October 15, the country honors the histories and accomplishments of the U.S. citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. What began as a week-long celebration in 1968 became an official 30-day observation in 1988.

Six Ways to Mark National Hispanic Heritage Month

1. Discover Hispanic heritage stories at museums near and far

Cultural institutions across the country are paying tribute to Hispanic Americans who have influenced and enriched our country and society. Discover documents, exhibits, films, blogs and more that highlight Hispanic culture. Special programs can be found at The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institution, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Check your local museums to see what special in-person and online programming they may have planned as well as children’s offerings. For live and virtual events, see hispanicheritagemonth.gov.

2. Camp out, take a hike, or click on a link!

The National Park Service (NPS) celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month too. The NPS shares moments of heritage and accomplishments of Hispanic and Latino Americans up to the present. 3. Support a Hispanic or Latino-owned business

If you don’t already conduct business with an Hispanic-owned or Latino-owned company, search the internet in your local area. Find a new food or clothing store that offers the vibrant flavors, fabrics, and colors of the culture. Or discover a resource that aligns with your company.

4. Be inspired: Dine in with friends to a special playlist

Cook your own Latin-inspired meal and invite family and friends to join in. Expand beyond the tried and true. Consider pork carnitas, empanadas, barbacoa, ceviche; a bowl of albondigas; grilled corn; and conchas for dessert. Assign each guest a course and see how many cultures you can represent and experience.

Delegate the music playlist to that person who likes to set the mood…. you know the one! And get the party started.

5. Play ball

Hispanic players have indisputably been part of America’s favorite summer past time for decades. If you grew up going to the games with family, think about getting them tickets. Or send them money through Western Union so they can pick the game they want to attend.

Can’t get to a game in person or want to learn how Hispanic players broke into the sport? Check out this ¡Pleibol! baseball exhibit online, in person at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, or near your home as it travels the country through Spring 2025.

6. Wet your whistle

Kick back, relax and enjoy an Hispanic or Latino beverage in the warmth of the day or the cooler evening. Try one of these: a refreshing margarita, paloma, beer, or agua fresca; or a creamy horchata or Mexican hot chocolate.
