What do you need to transfer money to a bank account?

To send money to a bank account with Western Union, you must provide:

  • The recipient’s full name,
  • The destination country,
  • The bank name,
  • The recipient’s account number or IBAN.

How long does a Western Union bank transfer take?

What is a bank code?

A bank code is a series of numbers used to identify banks worldwide. Bank codes can range from 3-23 digits, depending on the country and the type of code. A bank code may be known as:

  • BSB
  • SWIFT code
  • BIC (Bank Identification Code)
  • NCC (National Clearing Code)
  • BSC (Bank Sort Code)
  • IFSC (Indian Financial System Code)

What is a SWIFT/BIC code?

A SWIFT/BIC is a worldwide code for identifying banks. SWIFT and BIC are sometimes used interchangeably but represent the same thing. These codes are 8-11 digits long and sometimes needed when sending money.

What is an IBAN?

An IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is used in some countries to identify a customer’s bank account. The IBAN is an alphabetical country code followed by 2 digits and then up to 35 characters for the bank account.

If you need an IBAN for your bank transfer, you should obtain this from your receiver.

What happens if I entered the wrong IBAN or SWIFT code when transferring money?

If the IBAN or SWIFT information is incorrect, the transaction may be rejected by the receiving bank. The money is then usually returned to Western Union and refunded to the sender. Contact our customer service team promptly to verify and correct your error.

Can I cancel or change a transfer to a bank account?

Yes, a bank transfer can be canceled if the amount has not yet been deposited into the recipient’s account. Cancellation times vary by country and bank. Log in to your Western Union account or contact customer service to request a cancellation.

How do I track a Western Union transfer?

Every Western Union transfer has a unique tracking number (MTCN). You can use this number on the Western Union website or app to check the status of your bank transfer in real time.
