How fast can cash be picked up in a foreign country?

Cash is usually available in 15-30 minutes1, though it may take until the same or next day depending on local agent hours and destination.

Are there restrictions on the amount of cash I can send or receive internationally?

To send money, you’ll need to verify your identity online. Once verified, you can send up to 3000 EUR within a 3-month period. Different limits apply for other payment and receiving methods. To check more sending limits, use our money transfer form before completing your transfer.

What happens if I lose my tracking number (MTCN) while traveling?

If you lose your MTCN (Money Transfer Control Number), you can still track your transfer on the Western Union website or app by selecting “Don’t know the MTCN?” and entering your phone number or the sender and receiver’s names, along with the transfer details. If you sent money online or on the app, you can also find the MTCN in your transfer history or confirmation email. For transfers sent in-store, check your receipt or contact customer care for help. The MTCN is required for cash pickup, so keep it safe and only share it with the intended recipient.

Can I send money for cash pick-up if I’m already traveling abroad?

Money can be sent online or via app at any time. You or your recipient can pick up cash at any Western Union location in the destination country.

What do I do if my transfer is delayed while traveling?

While we try our best to make every transfer seamless, sometimes it might be put on hold or get delayed. It could be because of the following:
  • We’re verifying your identity.
  • We are double-checking a few other details.
  • Your bank is reviewing your transfer.
  • We’re waiting for more information from you.
To avoid any further delay, you may contact us with your tracking number (MTCN). If need be, we may contact you.
For a better transfer experience going forward, please provide the following details accurately:
  • Your receiver’s name as it appears on their government-issued ID.
  • Your and your receiver’s bank, credit or debit card, or wallet details.
  • Your contact details such as phone number and email address.
  • Your ID details.

Can I pay with international bank cards or mobile wallets when traveling?

Supported payment methods include debit/credit3 cards (Visa, Mastercard, Maestro) and sometimes mobile phones, with extra verification for security. To check available payment methods, use our money transfer form.
