Observing Diwali jump-starts the new year, for many of the 1.6 million Indians who live in Canada, observing Diwali jump-starts the new year. The start of the five-day holiday, celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and some Buddhists, usually falls between October and November, as it shifts each year depending on the position of the moon.
During Diwali—or Deepavali—which in Sanskrit means “rows of lights,” many Indians illuminate their homes with lights where they celebrate with family and also go to more significant festivities that include fireworks and light shows. In Canada, Diwali is observed by local groups, businesses, schools, and associations which host activities during the holiday. These can change year to year, so check local websites for events that feature dances, plays, and music performances with accomplished Indian artists.
