Identity verification

Verify your identity

You’ll need to verify your identity to send 7 000 DKK or more. After your identity has been verified, you’ll be able to send up to 35 000 DKK per transfer.

You can verify your identity in any of the following ways:

During an online transfer

To verify during an online transfer, please do the following:

  1. Log in to your profile and initiate a transfer of 7 000 DKK or more. If you don’t have a profile yet, create one.
  2. Enter the required details and select Continue.
  3. Confirm your details on the Complete your profile page and select Continue.
  4. Provide additional identity information and select Continue.
  5. Select NemID, MitID, or Verify using government-issued ID3 to initiate verification.
  • NemID or MitID for instant verification:
    1. Confirm your details and follow the instructions.
    2. Review and select Send to complete your transfer.
  • Verify using government-issued ID:
    1. Choose a government-issued ID to upload, enter the details, and select Next.
    2. Review your transfer and select Send.
    3. Upload your documents and select Upload.

We may take 30 minutes or more to verify using your government-issued ID. If we need additional information, we’ll request you to send it via email.

Note: Before you upload a copy of your documents, be sure of the following:

  • Your picture, signature, birthdate, expiration date, and any other important information are clearly visible.
  • The information matches that on your Western Union profile.
  • Your documents are in PDF or JPG formats.

By going to your profile

To verify your identity with NemID or MitID, just do the following:

  1. Log in to your profile. If you don’t have a profile yet, create one on westernunion.com or our mobile app.
  2. Select the profile icon at the top right and select Start verification.
  3. Select Continue to verify with NemID or MitID.
  4. Review your personal details and select Confirm.
  5. Follow the instructions to complete your identity verification.

What are the acceptable documents for identity verification?

You can provide any of the following:

  • Your passport
  • Your EU or EEA issued ID
  • Your Danish driving license

Do we need more information from you? 

If we need additional information from you, we’ll request you to send it via email.

Please note that the documents should be sent as PDFs or JPGs. Also, be sure your documents are clear and easy to read.

Does Western Union need to confirm my identity?

If you want to send more than 7.000 DKK, we will need to verify your identity. After that is finished, your send limit will increase to 35.000 DKK.

Why do I need to verify my identity when sending money online?

All financial institutions, including Western Union, are required to collect additional identity information to know their customers better. When we understand who is sending money to whom, we can help protect your money from being used for illegal activities.

Note: You must be at least 18 years old to send or receive money with Western Union.

We might ask you for additional details to verify your identity when sending money online.

How long will it take to verify my identity?

There are two ways to verify your identity:

  • Online

    Electronic verification usually can be done immediately. In some cases, we may need more information and it could take longer. If you choose this method, you will be asked to enter information such as your national ID number, or banking ID, or other information needed to verify your identity online.

    Please make sure the information in your Western Union profile is correct. The name in your profile must match the name on your ID. If electronic verification fails twice, you will not be able to send money online until you have been verified by us.

 

  • ID letter

    If you choose to verify by mail, please make sure the address in your profile is correct. We will send you a letter with further instructions. The process may take as long as 10 business days. Learn more
