How to track a money transfer on our website

Once you have registered on the Western Union website and sent a money transfer to a loved one, we’ll give you an online receipt to confirm that the transfer has been approved, and you’ll receive an email with your ten-digit MTCN tracking number.

Once you have your MTCN tracking number, go to our Track a Transfer page and enter the number to see where the money is. You can also share the number with the person you are sending to, so they can track the transfer. We recommend you share the number as securely as possible.

But what if you don’t have your MTCN number to hand? We understand that the number may get lost, or the confirmation email deleted by mistake. If you have this problem, don’t worry. You can still track your bank transfer by following these simple steps:

  1. On the Track a Transfer page, click “Don’t know the MTCN?”

  2. Enter the sender’s phone number, or the sender and receiver names.

  3. Select the receiver’s country and enter the amount of money being sent.

  4. Enter the date of the transfer.

  5. Click “Continue.”

This will tell you the exact status of your transfer. We’ll now explain what each status in our transfer tracking service means.

Statuses in our transfer tracking service

When you’re tracking international transfers with Western Union, there are a number of different statuses that provide useful information to understand what stage your transfer is at. They are as follows:

In progress

Your transfer has been processed and your money is on its way to your loved one.

Available

Your transfer is ready for pickup. Your loved one needs to visit a local Western Union agent location with a government-issued ID and the MTCN tracking number.

Received

The money has been picked up by your loved one at one of our local agent locations.

Paid

The transfer is complete, and the money has been credited to your receiver’s mobile wallet or bank account1.

Delivered

The transfer is complete, and the money has been credited to your receiver’s bank account.

In exceptional cases where there is a problem or delay with your money transfer, the following statuses will provide you with up-to-date information:

On hold

The transfer is taking longer than usual because we are verifying a few things.

Canceled

This may be due to self-cancellation or a cancellation from our end. If a cancellation occurs, the money is usually refunded within seven business days.

Refunded

The amount of the transfer has been refunded via the original payment method.

Thanks to our bank transfer tracking service, you can see where your money is at all times. You can check the status of a transfer on both the website and the app. Simply go to the Track a Transfer section, enter the ten-digit MTCN tracking number assigned to that transfer, and you will see the status. Depending on the transfer method, there are four statuses meaning that the transfer has already arrived:

Available

The transfer is ready for pickup. The receiver needs to visit a local Western Union agent location with a government-issued ID and the MTCN tracking number to pick up the money.

Received

The money has been picked up by the receiver at one of our local agent locations.

Paid

The transfer is complete, and the money has been credited to your receiver’s mobile wallet or bank account1.

What is the Western Union tracking number?

The Western Union tracking number is a ten-digit number that you can use to check the status of your bank transfer at any time. At Western Union, we call it a money transfer control number, or MTCN. It is a unique tracking number assigned to your transfer.

You can find the MTCN on your transfer receipt and your transfer history page. Please do not share your MTCN with anyone except your receiver or a Western Union representative.
