You can receive money in two ways:

Collect cash at an agent location or have your money deposited into your bank account directly.


How to receive money at an agent location

  • Inform the agent your sender’s name, the amount sent, the country/territory from where the money was sent, and the Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN).
  • Fill out your “Receive Form”.
  • Collect your money and the receipt.

Direct to bank money transfer service

Western Union cooperates with ChinaPay, a subsidiary of UnionPay, to provide reliable direct to bank money transfer service. The money can be paid into qualifying bank accounts at major commercial banks2 in China.

  • Receiver's bank name
  • Receiver's bank account number (UnionPay debit card number starts with “62”)

Receive Money

In accordance with relevant regulatory requirements in China, when using Direct to Bank product for the first time, Western Union will need to match and validate the receiver’s personal information in the system before the fund can be deposited into the qualifying bank account. Therefore, the receiver needs to either:

  • Proactively contact Western Union® China Customer Service Center for validation after the transaction has been made (this option is recommended), or
  • Wait for the Western Union China Customer Service Center to contact the receiver within 24 hours after the transaction was made.

The following information needs to be provided for the validation process:

  • Receiver’s Chinese name
  • Receiver’s ID number

Any subsequent transfers to the appointed receiver and bank account via Western Union Direct to Bank products will be performed in minutes2.

Note: Due to the regulations in China, if the sender and receiver’s names are the same (sending funds to himself), the transaction will be rejected.

2. To qualify, the sender must provide a UnionPay debit card number that starts with ‘62’ and that has been associated with a bank account held at a supported bank. Major commercial banks as defined by the China Banking Regulatory Commission Annual Report 2014. Transfers to certain accounts may only be available during China bank processing hours, which are 7.30am to 9.45pm China Standard Time. Funds sent to a first-time receiver may be delayed until WU receives additional required information from the receiver. Service and funds availability depends on certain factors including amount sent, currency availability, regulatory issues, consumer protection issues, identification requirements, required receiver action(s), delivery restrictions, location hours, and differences in time zones (collectively, “Restrictions”).
