Juneteenth – A celebration of freedom and culture

Global Citizen By Western Union Jun 17, 2022

On Sunday, June 19 an important celebration will take place – Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day.

While the United States celebrates traditional Independence Day on July 4, Juneteenth has been a tradition in the U.S.  since June of 1866. The holiday pays homage to the emancipation of slaves and day that African Americans in the city of Galveston, Texas finally learned of their freedom, nearly two and half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863.

The holiday is a celebration deeply rooted in African American history, culture, and progress. On this day, African Americans often come together with family, friends and loved ones for celebrations that often include food, art, dancing, parades reunions, festivals and much more.

We are  proud to celebrate diversity and announced Juneteenth as a Company holiday in the U.S. prior to it becoming a federal holiday in 2021.
