Personal ideals that guide professional choices

Last week I got the opportunity to meet with a large group of students and faculty at Miami Dade College during The Mike Fernandez Global Business Leadership Series. The event was a fantastic opportunity to exchange values and thoughts with the younger generation of aspiring professionals that are our future leaders.

Our discussion centered around business and values, and this critical juncture in their lives. They are currently evaluating which ideals, beliefs and standards they hold themselves to. I shared some of my own leadership values and explained why these moral standards are so important to me. Staying true to what we believe—what I call integrity— is based on our beliefs. Being 100% accountable and focused on delivering on our commitments is what ultimately makes you stand.

We also discussed how diversity is needed to build better decision-making processes and embracing people that are different than yourself, and then respecting and caring for those you interact with. Listening to others ultimately is what helps you make better decisions.

At Western Union, while we continue with our digital transformation to provide our multi-generational customer base with omni-channel choice and a great customer experience, we are guided by these fundamentals. We have a strong culture of accountability, innovation and inclusion.
