Oliver is one of 174 WU Scholars recipients selected to receive a USD $2,500.00 scholarship from the Western Union Foundation for demonstrating academic excellence, as well as perseverance, aspiration and community-mindedness. During a ceremony in Denver, Colorado, Western Union surprised Oliver with a four-year WU Scholars commitment totaling USD $10,000.
Question: What are your future ambitions?
Oliver: I have chosen to study accounting, business and real estate because they will allow me to reach my long-term career goals of becoming a real estate and e-commerce business owner. I also aspire to become a community leader to create hands on programs to provide students with real world experience so that they can also accomplish their dreams.
Question: How have you helped to make the world a better place?
Oliver: I have been an ambassador for Junior Achievement where I teach Spanish to second graders at a local elementary school. My service has taught me the significance of investing in the development of others and giving back to the community. I want to help give students the same opportunities that I have had.
Question: What has fueled your future ambitions?
Oliver: I am a first-generation migrant to the United States and English is my second language. During my elementary years, my parents spent countless hours practicing with me and studying. Although they didn’t speak English, they helped me become literate. Their encouragement is what keeps me focused on obtaining a college education despite any barriers that arise on my journey. I know that with a college education I will be able to provide more for my family, for myself and for my community.
