The last time Liverpool FC played Bayern Munich away from Anfield, the current Bayern gaffer, Niko Kovac’s brother, Robert, made up part of the German outfit’s starting defensive line that was aiming to keep the likes of Emile Heskey and Michael Owen quiet.
90 minutes later, a Super Cup title was confirmed to the Reds trophy cabinet, and the Monaco streets, for one night only at least, were painted Anfield red. And that’s the beautiful thing about football, two clubs from two different countries, playing in another European city – three cultures in harmony.
This does mean, however, that this will be LFC’s first trip to Munich since that magical semi-final second-leg away win back in 1981! People, landscapes and cultures develop daily, so there’s a lot for Reds making the trip out to the Allianz Arena to take in, away from the – what promises to be – enthralling action.
Come for the football but stay for the food! With nearly 150 different booths ranging from Germany’s best sausages to a bread lover’s dream (and hopefully, come the evening, the Bayern defence will be as twisted and tied up as the freshly baked pretzels you can grab from the Viktualienmarkt).
The German city is almost three times the size of Liverpool, so getting around and seeing everything before kick-off might be tight. Therefore, we’d recommend hopping on a Segway to visit the legendary landmarks throughout Munich’s Old Town.
Jumping on a Segway also allows you to pretend you are Andrew Robertson, just for a day, as you zip around without tiring!
Become one of the 1.5million annual visitors a year to come and (try to) see all 28,000+ artefacts that are housed in the ‘German Museum’ – sounds like it is almost big enough to hold all of LFC’s European Cups!
Choosing a beer hall to visit in Munich is like trying to choose your favourite LFC player of all-time: impossible due to the number of options!
But if you do opt for the Hofbräuhaus for the post-match debrief, then you will be sipping your massive beers in the oldest beer hall in Munich!
You’ve come all this way to visit an English Garden?! But don’t be fooled by the name, this wonderfully scenic park contains a Greek temple, a Chinese pagoda and a Japanese tea house.
A great place to throw down a picnic blanket, unwrap the local nibbles and drinks you’ve grabbed from the Viktualienmarkt and discuss those pre-match predictions for the Bayern clash.
Who knows when the next time the Reds will pay a visit to die Roten. With all the sights, sounds and tastes Munich has to offer there’s something for everyone to enjoy win, lose or draw.
