Berlinstagram: A Guide to Germany’s Capital

Global Citizen By Stefan Zechner Nov 20, 2017

More museums than rainy days, nonstop nightlife, brezel (pretzel) stands on every corner — it’s no wonder Berlin is Germany’s top tourist destination. Add historic landmarks and world-famous street art to the mix, and you’ve got the perfect Instagram muse. With the help of hashtag data, we compiled Berlin’s top spots for scroll-stopping material.

1. Berlin Wall

Number of Hashtags: 529,095

While most of the Wall fell in 1989, a 1,316-meter stretch of its remains have become the world’s largest open-air gallery. The controversial “Fraternal Kiss” gets a lion’s share of attention, but it’s worth posing with hundreds of other artworks there.

2. Brandenburg Gate

Magic moments

Modeled after the Propylaeum in Athens, Brandenburg Gate’s Doric columns offer a stunning glimpse at Germany’s neo-classical architecture. The “Quadriga” sculpture on top depicts the Goddess of Victory driving a horse-drawn chariot.

For an epic photo, capture a silhouette of the Gate at sunset like @mischaheue.

3. Alexanderplatz

Number of Hashtags: 327,054

Both the liveliest and largest square in Berlin, Alexanderplatz is a must on your Instagram to-do list. Your stop won’t be complete without a shot of the Fernsehturm (311,011 hashtags alone). At 368 meters high, the television tower is Germany’s tallest building and the perfect spot to put your vertical pano skills to work.

Pro Tip: Purchase tickets to the tower’s observation deck for a 360-degree view of the entire city.

4. Reichstag

That spiral ramp that winds all the way up to the top of the Berlin's Reichstag ? If you are in London this weekend don't miss the alike spiral staircase within City Hall. You have only one chance a year to admire it! ➡️ @openhouselondon • • • #fineart_architecture #structures_greatshots #architecture_view #thecoolhunter #fubiz #architectonics_world #archi_award #archi_features #buildingporn #lookingup_architecture #minimal_lookup #minimalism_world #skrwt #passionpassport #guardiantravelsnaps #architizer #archilovers #dezeen #archdaily #architectureanddesign #sonyalpha #sonyimages #sonyalphasclub #sonyphotogallery #guardiancities #just_features #lesphotographes #minimal_perfection #mindtheminimal #huffpostgram @sonyalpha @sonyalphasclub @sonyimages

There’s plenty to do — and ’gram — at Berlin’s most popular park. Add some action to your feed with a stein-clinking Boomerang at the scenic Café am Neuen See biergärten.

The Victory Column (43,676 hashtags) at the heart of the park is another must-see. While Insta-worthy on its own, a staircase inside leads to incredible views of the Brandenburg Gate and Reischtag building.

7. Potsdamer Plaza

Number of Hashtags: 125,812

Once a desolate wasteland, imposing skyscrapers, bustling shopping centers, and chic cafés now fill Potsdamer Plaza. It’s the best place to capture Berlin’s metropolitan lifestyle.

Pro Tip: Stick around until nighttime when colorful light shows project on the Sony Center’s glass roof.

8. Gendarmenmarkt

Number of Hashtags: 47,367

A trio of impressive architecture stands in the center of Gendarmenmarkt square. Shoot a panorama of the Dom Deutscher, Konzerthaus, and Französischer Dom from left-to-right for sure-fire likes.
