How do I send money with Western Union

Simply visit a Bank Asia & Social Islami Bank (SIBL) location and open a bank account. This is so that a remittance file will be opened and your profile will be created.

Where can I send money to?

Cash pickup

Send money in minutes² to any of our more than 525,000 Western Union agent locations³ in over 200 countries and territories.

Bank account

Send money direct to bank accounts in more than 100 countries.

What can I send money for?

While you cannot send money directly to any business entity—nor pay for international travel and related purposes—you can send for:

• Overseas education (e.g. tuition fees and living expenses)
• Overseas healthcare or medical services
• Family support to your home country

Who can be my receiver?

You can send money from Bangladesh to any individual overseas. Simply provide your receiver's full name and (if sending to a bank account) their bank account number, bank name, and bank routing number.

Bangladeshi nationals can send money to a:

• Student studying abroad
• Bangladeshi residing abroad for medical treatment

Expatriates with a valid work permit can send money to a:

• Family member in their home country

How do I pay for my money transfer?

Your Social Islami Bank (SIBL) Bank Account will be credited for funding the payment in BDT as per the conversion rate set by Western Union. Your receiver will get the money in their country’s currency.

How much can I send from Bangladesh?

Bangladeshi nationals can send as per the invoice from the university for student tuition fees and relevant living cost. They can also pay for medical bills as per the medical institution invoice and relevant living cost.

Expatriates can send 75% of their monthly income as per the pay slip provided by the company.

How much does it cost to send money with Western Union?

You can send any amount for a flat Tk 500 transfer fee¹ until 30 June 2022.

Will there be any receiver charges?

Receivers will not pay any transfer fee. The one-time transfer fee will only be paid by the sender.

Can I cancel my money transfer after it was sent?

If your money transfer has not yet been received, you can visit a Social Islami Bank (SIBL) branch and cancel the transaction.

How to send money for overseas education?

1. Visit your nearest AB branch of SIBL in order to open the student file. Only the individual who will pursue the overseas education is allowed to open files. But these individuals can nominate a sponsor who will act on their interest.
2. Submit the following required documents:

• Offer Letter from the university referring the student's name and course duration.
• Estimates of tuition fees and living cost per year.
• Photocopy of the passport information page of applicant.
• Visa copy of the applicant
• Relevant previous educational certificates
• 2 photograph copies of applicants
• Duly filled bank account form by sponsoring a person who will maintain the file on behalf of the applicant

Please submit any other documents if requested by the agents. For your second money transfer onwards, you will need to provide the previous semester's payment receipt.

How to send money for overseas medical services?

1. Visit your nearest AB branch of SIBL in order to open a medical file. The file must either be opened by:
   • The name of the patient who will avail the healthcare service abroad, or.
   • The sponsor nominated by the patient who will act on behalf of patient’s interest
2. Submit the following required documents:
   • Recommendation letter received by the name of applicant from the medical board (health directorate) or from appropriate medical specialists.
   • Cost estimation from foreign medical institutions.
   • Photocopy of passport information page and visa.
   • Duly filled bank account form by sponsoring a person.
   • Work permit
   • Passport photocopy (information page)
   • Visa copy
   • Letter of recommendation mentioning the remuneration structure from your company in favor of you

How can expatriates send money back home?

Simply maintain an expatriate file at selected SIBL locations. Expatriates who are residing in Bangladesh are only allowed to send money to their home country.

Why do I have to maintain a file?

As per the in-country rules and regulations, any individuals who wants to send money for the said purposes must maintain a file with the bank.

Can I go to a different agent location to do my transaction?

Unfortunately, you cannot go to a different location. For all money transfers, you (nominee) have to go to the same location wherein the file was opened.
