Money By Justina Saveikytė Jul 9, 2019

From Edirne to Hakkâri and many points in between, supporting the ones you love, knows no borders. Whether it’s the first time you’ve ever sent cash back home to Turkey with Western Union, or you’re already a My WU® member earning rewards for transfer fee[1] reductions. We’ve compiled a few tips to make sure that your next international money transfer will be your smoothest yet.

[1] Western Union also makes money from currency exchange.  When choosing a money transmitter, carefully compare both transfer fees and exchange rates.  Fees, foreign exchange rates and taxes may vary by brand, channel, and location based on a number of factors. Fees and rates subject to change without notice.

1. Know the Euro to Lira exchange rate before you send

Making sure that the ones you love get exactly the amount they need is as important to us as it is to you. Foreign exchange markets can often be volatile. That’s why Western Union makes it easy for our customers to check the Turkish Lira exchange rate directly on the Western Union® app or on WU.com. You’ll check exactly how much money will arrive to your receiver before you even start your transaction.

If you prefer to pay for your transaction in cash, set up your transfer on the Western Union® app, this will lock in the exchange rate[1], and you can complete your transaction at a nearby agent location.

[1] Due to local restrictions, in some countries exchange rates can only be fixed on receiver side.

2. Choose how you want to send money to Turkey

Your first step in making your money transfer is choosing the way you want to send – on the go from virtually anywhere with our app, from the comfort of your home with WU.com, or in person at your local agent location. Please note that your choice can affect the transfer fee which is displayed before you continue with your transaction.

Pay the way it works best for you. You can send money in cash, via credit card, with SOFORT or a direct bank transfer from your account. The fees and exchange rates for sending money depend on several factors, such as the speed of the transaction and destination of funds.

3. What’s the quickest way to send money with Western Union to Turkey from Germany?

Now that you’ve chosen your preferred way to send money, think about what’s best for your receivers. You can save them from waiting in line by sending your money transfer directly to a qualifying bank account[1]. In this case, you can send money in the same banking day to most/major banks in Turkey[2].

Western Union currently works with a number of banks in Turkey including Ziraat Bank, İş Bank, Garanti Bank, Akbank, and Yapı Kredi among others. You also have the option to send cash back home to Turkey at one of over 12,000 Western Union® agent locations[3]. If you choose so, the money can be available for cash pick up in minutes[4].

Regardless of how your loved ones wish to receive their money, they can track your transfer from start to finish by using the tracking number (MTCN). It can be found in your transfer history page and on your receipt. You should always save your MTCN and send it only to your receiver after you have completed your transfer.
