You must update your address with the U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), but most importantly, you need to file your AR-11 form. Make sure you follow immigration laws for a seamless transition to your new residence and avoid legal issues. Learn about the AR-11 form, how to file it, and everything else you need to know.
What is an AR-11 form?
Form AR-11, also known as the Alien’s Change of Address form, is used to report a change of address with the USCIS. The form requests your name, date of birth, alien registration number, and address information. You must complete the form within 10 days of moving.
The form is required under the Immigration and Nationality Act. If a change of address is not properly reported, it is punishable by fine, imprisonment, or deportation within the United States. So, if you’re planning to move, it’s best to be proactive. Download, fill out, and submit the form early to avoid any penalties.

How to file your AR-11 form
The filing process for the AR-11 form is straightforward. To avoid any repercussions, complete one of the following steps:
Submit your change of address online
You can conveniently submit your AR-11 form online from your phone, tablet, or computer. When completing your form, make sure to fill out all sections and confirm all information is correct. Once you complete the information, sign the form in the space provided for your signature. Double check that your information is correct and signed because the USCIS will reject and return any unsigned forms.
Alternatively, you can also register to get a USCIS account. If you submit your AR-11 form with a USCIS account, you can track the status and history of your case, access any notices, and send messages to USCIS.
Call the USCIS customer service number
You can call the USCIS customer service center to change your address. Confirm your information directly with a representative.
Send a letter to a local immigration office
You can mail a letter, along with your AR-11 form, directly to an immigration office. When you mail your letter and form, use certified, registered, or receipt mail and use the complete address found on the USCIS website. You can mail your form through USPS, FedEx, DHL, or UPS. It’s important to use trackable mail to prove that you’ve submitted your forms. Additionally, make copies of your submission to file and store them somewhere safe.
If you believe you need to file, make sure that your move is permanent versus a temporary change of address. If you are staying somewhere temporarily, make sure you can still receive mail at your permanent address on record with the USCIS.
Additionally, never pay for immigration forms. If you do, you may be a victim of an immigration scam.
