Linux System Administrator Overview

We are looking for a Linux System Administrator who will be responsible for assisting in all aspects of operations and maintenance of the company’s production, test, and development environments running java applications on linux under the JBOSS application server.


Required Skills/Experience:

  • This individual will ensure that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to organizational standards and are functioning optimally.
  • Strong networking, troubleshooting, database, and application deployment/maintenance skills are crucial.
  • Only candidates with a VERY strong Linux skill set will be considered.  Individual must have considerable knowledge of linux and networking security procedures.
  • Database Administration skills are considered a valuable asset.
  • This individual will be one of several providing 7x24x365 support of the production environment.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups, etc. 
  • Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions; perform ongoing efficacy assessment of security policies and systems; review, recommend, and implement security systems and tools in support of the company’s security policies. 
  • Provide Tier II/other support for per request from operations and customer support teams. Investigate and troubleshoot complex infrastructure and systems issues and escalate as required.  Troubleshoot networking and http issues. 
  • Coordinate with 3rd parties as required for VPN or other connectivity issues.
  • Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted parties. 
  • Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure / add new services as necessary. 
  • Upgrade and configure system software and hardware as needed in coordination with the R&D team. 
  • Maintain operational, configuration, or other procedures. Ensure that policies are adhered to. 
  • Deploy new code to production servers and coordinate with affected parties. 
  • Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning. 
  • Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required. 
  • Configure Load balancers, CPU, memory, and disks as required. 
  • Plan for disaster contingencies and be prepared to act if a disaster occurs. 
  • Review and tune database, run queries, create reports, etc.

  • Network Monitoring:  Nagios

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree (4-year) or equivalent experience
  • Systems Administration/System Engineer certification or equivalent in Unix.
  • 4+ years linux system administration experience.
