China Youth Development Foundation–china

Poverty throughout China deprives more than 30 million children between the ages of 6-14 of access to education.  Many rural areas do not have sufficient funds to build or even repair existing schools.

Such staggering numbers of children not attending school poses long-term problems for tomorrow’s workforce.  Seizing on tangible opportunities to address this problem,  Western Union staff in the Asia Pacific region contributed $50,000 (with the Foundation match) to help The China Youth Development Foundation build two schools in the poverty-stricken Liaoning Province.  One facility serves the needs of primary students while the second is for both elementary and middle school children.

The China Youth Development Foundation works as an advocate for young people throughout the country by building and refurbishing schools; offering grant-in-aid programs to help young people return to school in spite of poor family conditions; providing teacher aids, writing materials and textbooks; and awarding college scholarships.

Thanks to Western Union’s generosity, 600 at-risk children now have the opportunity to attend school, many for the first time.
